Shaking up the MDM tree!

I’ve been waiting for the big shakeup to start in the Mobile Device Management (MDM) space and my gut tells me it is going to start soon…

Looking at the leading companies in the Gartner MDM magic quadrant, a few of them are under 100 employees. The biggest company in the quadrant has around 700 employees (Good Technologies)…

The big shake-up I’m referring to is the one that’s going to happen when one or two of the big guys enter the leadership quadrant. My gut tells me that two those companies will be Symantec and Microsoft. Each have been quietly (Microsoft more so) positioning their products to make a run on the other players in quadrant space...

Another analogy (I love them), would be equating it to a horse race. You know how it goes, a couple horses hanging out in back of the pack and then make a break for the lead at the end of the race… Microsoft for the most part has not even been in the race, but it may just enter soon from the sidelines with its Intune offering. The big shake-up is coming….

What will the leader quadrant look like after we have a couple large enterprise firms like Microsoft and Symantec join? Will we see a couple quick purchases by IBM, Apple and Google? Who will be gobbled up and by whom? Will Apple and Google decide this is a formidable space to hang their moniker? Will each firm want a Mobile Device Management platform with offerings of their own? Will Google throw more weight behind their prior acquisition of 3LM? Will Good Technologies be purchased or fall prey to one of the upcoming silent but deadly predators: Fixmo, Enterproid, or OpenPeak? What will happen to a couple of the MDM favorites like MobileIron or AirWatch?  When the shakeup occurs and the musical chairs stops, who will potentially acquire them? Will they be able to remain and grow on their own (I believe for a good percentage of the market, they will).

My predictions: Symantec will enter the leader quadrant in the MDM review for 2013, since they have rounded out their MDM & MAM offerings. Keep an eye on RIM entering as well, now that BlackBerry Mobile Fusion (renamed BES10) is now available. Microsoft might make a run on this market, after the launch of Windows Desktop & Phone 8… Who knows what will happen next… I do know this…

The tree is going to shake!
